Face Lift for MSU?

| January 21, 2010 | 8 Comments
Rumors are flying about a change to the MSU helmet logo. In fact, they aren’t even rumors anymore. Athletic Director, Mark Hollis, confirmed this on Thursday when he released a statement saying that the new logo was just part of a larger project to be unveiled in April. Hollis also stated that the new logo helps to enhance the branding of the Michigan State product by a single symbol.

Listen Mark, up until this logo change, you have been a great AD. Please don’t change the logo! MSU has already built their brand around this logo. This logo that has been around many years. To me, the new logo screams Conference USA. Plus, what will this guy do? (Ha, Davis)

Hopefully, this is just part of Nike’s Pro Combat Football uniforms and will only be worn once next season. I’m very picky about uniforms and I think what they have now is perfect(except for the helmet color not matching the uniforms). Readers of IASID, let us know what you think…Old or new?

    Old!!!

  2. Ryan Madden says:

20 "Official" Logo's MSU has used for the University or The Athletic Department over the years (And I'm sure there is more):

    1. Block "S" (University wide, this is the most lasting)

    2. Current Spartan Helmet (Only been around since the 80's)

    3. Basketball script "State" from the 70's (Won the 1979 Basketball Championship with this as a primary Logo)

    4. Basketball bridged "Michigan State" (Won the 2000 Basketball Championship with this as the primary logo)

    5. Gruff Sparty Head (A movement to bring this back has been gaining steam)

    7. Block "MSU"

    8. The official seal

    9. The official seal over a block "S" (Not used as much anymore, but still shows up on internal letterhead)

    10. Hockey script "Michigan State" (Won the '86 and '07-08 Hockey championship with this…added "Black" to the Uniforms YEARS ago.)

    11. 1962 Spartan Head (The USC like logo…worn years before USC added a Logo…won Football MNC's with this one)

    12. 1970 Spartan Head (Added a black outline to the '62 logo)

    13. Cauliflower Spartan Head (Desinged by player Mike Hurd, this only lasted for about 4 years in the 70's)

    14. Nike Script State (current primary basketball logo and one terrible year as a football logo)

    15. Nike script state over the outline of the state (Painted on the Breslin center floor, added to the football helmets last season without the "State")

    16. Interlocking MAC – Still appearing on throwback mechandise, and on some MSU buildings.

    17. MSC seal (This and the Cauliflower Spartan Head are the only 2 that aren't really used anymore)

18 The MSU capital lettering logo with the line between MS and U (Used quite a bit during my undergrad years).

    19. Beaumont Tower Logo (On most official MSU letterheads now-a-days).

    20. Goofy cartoon Sparty No. 1 logo (On a lot of baby and kids gear)

    21. Block "MICHIGAN STATE" (currently on all the Athletic Websites/Jud era on the Basketball Uniforms.)

Bonus 22…The Stupid 3D looking 3D "S" from the Saban era Football jersey's.

Point…what's one more to add to the galaxy? The current helmet is not that old, and is probably not going away (Unless they want to rip out the brick wall at the Breslin Center or the floors at the new football building).

Good stuff, Ryan. My favorite logo is #15. But, I don't think it would translate to a helmet sticker.

  4. cblust21 says:

The Gruff Sparty is probably my favorite…but I don't think I'd want that as our main logo.

  5. cblust21 says:

A couple of the examples above are a bit of a stretch…Goofy Cartoon, Beaumont Tower, seal over the block 'S' and the seal itself. You could dig up 20 logos for just about every school.

  6. Bush says:

    $$$$$

Hard to argue with creative ways to bring in money. Magic's team won a national championship when they introduced the logo being referred as the "old logo."

  7. Gurgz says:

    Marketing genius.
