Former Local Athletes With Money Issues
Professional athletes always seem to live the good life – nice houses, expensive cars, flashy clothes. Well, they’re people too and even they come across money issues time and again.
Over the past month or so, it has been made public that three former local athletes have been unable to pay back loans or have outstanding tax debts. Today, the Detroit News published that Steve Garvey, a former Michigan State baseball player and Major League first baseman, owes nearly $500,000 in delinquent state and federal taxes. Garvey, once dubbed “Mr. Clean”, currently resides in California.
Former Detroit Northern High School, Syracuse University and NBA basketball star, Derrick Coleman, also owns a laundry list of outstanding debts. A couple of Coleman’s properties have been sold at sheriff’s auctions and a downtown Detroit restaurant, Sweet Georgia Brown, partially owned by Coleman, closed down in early 2009 because of unpaid rent. Apparently, Mr. Coleman had too much money wrapped up in failing businesses.
Retired Lions defensive end, Luther Elliss, will have his Oakland Township home foreclosed upon in the coming weeks after already having lost a home in Utah. Elliss, a father of eleven, was once well noted for giving quite a bit of time and money to charities. He was paid $11.6 million from 2000-2004 and is now relying on friends and area churches to pay bills. To me, it is absolutely ridiculous that somebody who once “had it all” is now accepting money from churches just to get by. The churches probably say that is what they are there for. But, I have a newsflash for you, Luther: churches aren’t banks.
Other former Michigan athletes who have run into money troubles include: former Eastern Michigan and Lion quarterback Charlie Batch, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers and former Red Wings Sergei Fedorov and Darren McCarty. It’s a shame when anyone has to go through money issues. It isn’t a good spot to be in. The economic conditions in Detroit are the pits, to say the least. If there is one thing we can take from this – as kids, we imitate what professional athletes do on the playing field; as adults, we can’t imitate what they do with their spending habits – or we’d all be in a world of hurt.
And in other news, Victoria’s Secret model, Miranda Kerr, is extremely hot.
