NFL Combine Superheroes

The upcoming week for some NFL hopefuls could be the most important week of their lives. Scoring well at the NFL combine could be the difference between ‘McDonalds Dollar-Menunaire’, or ‘champagne wishes and caviar dreams’. So, do NFL teams really put that much stock into these scores? Most don’t, but I think some teams do and may even draft a player based solely on their combine scores and a highlight video. Some of these scores are so ridiculous, that they are almost superhuman…or maybe superhero?

Chris Johnson – The Flash
Prior to running the 40yd dash, Chris Johnson was predicted to be a late 2nd to 3rd round pick at the 2008 NFL Draft. At the combine, CJ ran a 4.24 sec 40yd dash and propelled himself into the 1st round, pick # 24, to the Tennessee Titans. Looking at other running backs taken in the late 2nd to 3rd rounds(Ray Rice, Kevin Smith, Jamaal Charles), it appears he earned himself roughly $1.8M more per year by improving his draft spot.

Gerald Sensabaugh – Spiderman
Gerald, a starter for the Dallas Cowboys, currently holds the record for highest vertical jump at 46 inches! 46 inches! Are you kidding me?! Put this in comparison to the NBA’s average vertical leap of 28”. Or the few NBA stars that can compare to this: Jason Richardson(46”), LeBron James(44”), Vince Carter(43”) and Kobe Bryant(38”).

Andre Smith – The Blob
While his combine didn’t break any records or help him move up the NFL draft ladder. It did help him earn a nickname, ‘The Blob’ for obvious reasons. His 40yd dash was probably one of the most viewed videos this time last year. Now with the Bengals, it appears that he will end up being a bust or injury prone for the rest of his career. Good thing he signed a multi-million dollar deal.
