Cheerleading is not a sport…says a District judge
Yesterday, U.S. District Court judge Stefan Underhill put an end to a somewhat often heated debate amongst boys and girls. In Quinnipiac University Volleyball players v. Quinnipiac University, Underhill ruled that competitive cheerleading is not a sport.
The suit was brought by members of the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team after the university announced it would, for budgetary reasons, replace the women’s volleyball program with a competitive cheer program.
In his holding disallowing the switch, Underhill stated:
Competitive cheer may, some time in the future, qualify as a sport under Title IX. Today, however, the activity is still too underdeveloped and disorganized to be treated as offering genuine varsity athletic participation opportunities for students.
The university must have had poor attorneys. My defense would have been a silent one. I would have walked up to the judge with dozens of pictures of cheerleaders. Come on, Judge. This looks pretty organized to me!
As part of the volleyball players’ victory in court, Quinnipiac has 60 days to devise a plan to keep the volleyball program and comply with Title IX.
For the record, the Quinnpiac Lady Bobcats volleyball squad finished the 2009 season with a 4-25 record…and ONLY ONE LOOKER – Stephanie Biediger (below) – no wonder the school tried to eliminate them. Stephanie probably could have converted to a cheerleader too. She’s hot and has to be somewhat athletic, right?
