"I think you should hit a five iron."
It was just a normal round of caddying for 23 year old Michigan State grad, Dave Maxey, at Point O’ Woods Country Club. See, Maxey has caddied an estimated 700 rounds at the Benton Harbor course where Stan Andrie is a member.
Andrie, who was playing in a member-guest tournament asked Maxey for his six iron as he approached the 165-yard par 3 ninth hole, his final hole of the day. Dave Maxey then uttered the words that would change his life forever, “I think you should hit a five iron.”
The tournament had a prize for a hole-in-one on the 9th hole – a brand new 4×4 Jeep Wrangler. After complying with Maxey’s suggestion, Andrie stepped up to the tee and turned back toward his caddy, “if I get a hole-in-one, do you want a big tip or the car?” Maxey, who had driven the same car since high school, laughed and said he’d take the car.
Andrie delivered. He knocked his five iron left of the pin where it took a bounce right and rolled into the cup. “Dave, you’ve got yourself a car!” Andrie said as he, playing partner Rich Parker and Maxey celebrated. It was the first hole-in-one Maxey had ever caddied for and the second career ace for Andrie.
“The look on his face was priceless. I don’t think he originally thought I was actually going to give it to him. But, I stuck to my word. I was happy to do it. He’s a great kid,” said Andrie, who has three college-age daughters.
