Last night, Matt Garza threw 120 pitches and made the Tigers lineup look like what is actually is: rubbish. He struck out six batters and surrendered only one walk to Brennan Boesch, in the second inning. Boesch was immediately erased on Ryan Raburn’s double-play ground ball. Garza only gave up three hard hit balls all night. Despite the Tigers lack of firepower, a no-hitter is a no-hitter. To retire 27 of 28 batters from any Major League club without giving up a hit is impressive. It was the 177th no-hitter in Major League history and the fifth no-no this season (sixth if had Jimmy Joyce called Jason Donald out at first).
Also last night, Joe Mauer went nuts on the Kansas City Royals pitching. In the midst of a 19-1 massacre over Kansas City, Joe Ma racked up five hits, including three singles, a double and a home run. He scored three runs and also had a measly seven rbis. Had he not been replaced in the bottom of the eighth inning, he would have had a sixth plate appearance. Why he wasn’t replaced earlier (say when it was 14-0 in the sixth inning) is beyond me. Maybe Ron Gardenhire was trying to pad his stats to help justify Mauer’s new eight year, $184 million deal. Either way, nasty night. In the live ball era, it was the 44th time that a player has racked up five hits and seven or more rbis in one game.
So, IASID faithful, whose night was more impressive: Garza’s or Mauer’s?
Tim is the founder and author of It’s Always Sunny In Detroit. Born and raised north of "The D", he was hands down the fastest kid on the playground (go ahead, race him). In his glory days as a Big Ten baseballer, Tim often thought about dating Jennifer Love Hewitt. After he hung ‘em up and got real, he graduated from law school and came back to Detroit to keep it sunny. Tim knows his stuff – and his stuff is sports (the games), sports (the business), funny clips, pretty ladies...and of course, sports.
Georgs, I think you might be able to no-hit the Tigers in their current state…the Tigers couldn't hit or lay off a high fastball.
I vote for Mauer.
