Chicago Sun Times doesn’t know who Matt Garza is.

Matt Garza was traded to the most overrated city in the country this past weekend.  He’ll be playing for the team that everybody roots for, but they aren’t sure why.  Translation: he was traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Chicago Cubs.

He’s a 27 year old who has had success in American League East.  If he can overcome the Cubs mediocre offense, he should enjoy more success pitching in the National League.  He’s a nice addition to an already decent pitching staff.  And Chicago welcomed him with open arms…even though they had no clue who he was.

The Chicago Sun Times welcomed Garza with a full-page spread on Sunday.  But there was an issue – the pitcher in the spread wasn’t Garza.  It was former teammate and current Tiger Joaquin Benoit.  Garza and Benoit share the same facial hair design, but Garza is neither chunky nor Latino.   See below…

Well done, everybody.  Just like the Cubbies, I guess the Sun Times can get ‘em next time.

    Dewey Defeats Truman!

  2. moished says:

THAT was the Tribune, not the Sun-Times. There are still two newspapers in Chicago. I'm referring to the Dewey defeats Truman comment of course.

Most overated city in the country?

  4. Next Year says:

Sports Chump + moished…that was hilarious…lost part of my mouth of morning java on that one…thanks

Most overrated city? Do you mean the home of the defending Stanley Cup Champions? The Sun Times could of put a picture of Chicago Bears starting lineman Roberto Garza, who finished first in the NFC North and not last like another city's team does annually, and nobody in Chicago would have noticed or cared because everyone reads the Tribune anyway.

  6. Goergs says:

    1. Yes, Chicago is the most overrated city. I've been there many times. It's fine, but it doesn't deserve the hype it gets, ergo overrated.
    2. This wasn't supposed to be a comparison for who has the better sports teams. But since you went there…
    3. You're really going to compare the Blackhawks' recent success to the Wings? Bad choice.
    4. Don't bash the Lions. Please don't bash the Lions. Nobody does that.
    5. Your pizza isn't all that and hot dogs aren't meant to be garnished with salad.

    Chicago >>>>>>>> Detroit.

And I'm from Toledo so I've been to Detroit (and Chicago for that matter) quite a bit in my life

  8. Matt says:

I won't even touch the absolute hilarity of someone from Detroit trying to pretend they are better off than anyone else (seriously, where could that even come from?) and just address this post, which is first off, incredibly, INCREDIBLY poorly timed; the whole Garza trade/wrong photo thing went down almost a week ago, man, what's the next topic you're going to have a fresh take on? Natalie Portman's performance in Black Swan? Maybe argue the Seahawks shouldn't be allowed in the play-offs with a losing record?

Second, there were a few other papers that made this mistake, too, and the root reason was that the photographer who took this photo mistakenly tagged it as Matt Garza, so while it, yes, is embarrassing for the Sun-Times, it's a bit more understandable as this photo comes up when you search for "Matt Garza" in the AP photo database.

And I'm not even a Cub fan. Go Sox! Tigers suck. Ha ha.

  9. Goergs says:

Who ever said Detroit was the bee's knees? I only said that Chicago is overrated.

  10. Bobby Aguilera says:

The US is overrated. There are dozens of better cities around the globe. However, Chicago is perhaps the 2nd best US city, behind San Diego.

  11. Kevin Woosley says:

According to you Chcago is overrated and our food isn't "all that". On the other hand, is there even a Detroit-style pizza or hotdog that people around the globe enjoy?

Easy to criticize. much harder to actually perform

  12. Goergs says:

There are a few Detroit pizza places that are better than Chicago-style – Buddy's Pizza and Shield's Pizza, if you like square and The Alibi Lounge if you prefer round.

For hot dogs, I'll take a Detroit coney over a Chicago dog all day.

    There is your performance.

  13. Anonymous says:

Hey Bobby Aguilera – the only thing good about San Diego is the weather and that was invented by Al Gore.

  14. Anonymous says:

Kevin Woosley – have you been to Detroit ?

  15. Kevin Woosley says:

A weak performance, unless you would claim that people around the world clamor enough for Buddy's Pizza that, in order to satisfy demand, it can be ordered for overnight shipment.

You seem to confuse the opinion of YOU with the evidence of thousands, if not millions of other people. Bravo for being proud of your city and what is familiar to you, boo hiss for lacking self-awareness.

  16. Kevin Woosley says:

Yes, "Anonymous", I have been. Is that going to prove something?

  17. Anonymous says:

    Kevin Woosley sucks.

  18. Anonymous says:

I have to go with Goergs on this one. He didn't say Chicago was bad. He said it was fine, but doesn't deserve the hype it gets. I totally agree. Chicago is where people go when you graduate college, don't know what else to do, want (desparately) for people to think you're big time, but are too scared to go to New York. It's fine. I've had fun there. It has stuff to offer. But for my money/time, it isn't worth the drive or flight.

  19. Goergs says:

Kevin, you seem to be confused that the post and the comments were written by ME, not thousands or millions of other people.

My preferences have nothing to do with "lacking self-awareness". Thanks anyway though.
