Christian Laettner: the High School Version

| February 2, 2011 | 1 Comment

In perhaps the most memorable shot in college hoops history, Duke’s Christian Laettner sunk Kentucky in the 1992 Elite Eight with a catch, fake right, dribble, turn around jumper.  Orting High School in Washington state drew up the same play in a last gasp effort to make the state playoffs.  Cody Cowan played the role of Grant Hill as the inbounder/quarterback and Isaac Lewis starred as Laettner.

Lewis didn’t have the time that Laettner did so the fake right and dribble back left didn’t happen, but the turn, heave and splash were pretty close to identical.  Instead of from the free throw line, Lewis hit his three or four feet behind the arc.

A few observations:
(1) the coach of the home team should be ashamed of himself for not guarding Cowan (the quarterback). It’s obvious that he didn’t learn anything from the Hill to Laettner play.
(2) The scoreboard operator (see home team’s science teacher) must have wanted a review on the non-existent monitor. He never put the winning basket on the board.
(3) If you listen closely, you can hear Orting High’s principal, Richard Belding, yelling “shoot your hopes and dreams!”
(4) Fine, I made up #3.  God Bless Saved by the Bell.
