It’s Always Sunny in Detroit would like to congratulate head coach/manager Jake Boss, Jr. and his players on their 2011 Big Ten title. It is State’s fourth ever Big Ten title in baseball and first since 1979.  The boys finished the regular season 34-18 overall with a 15-9 record in conference play. They were led by a great offense, especially the top half of the order.

Senior CF Brandon Eckerle (picture above) hit .386 and set a school record for the most career hits. He also stole 21 bases. Senior 1B Jeff Holm (also pictured above) hit .379 with nine home runs and 61 rbis. He stole 20 bags himself and is a heavy candidate for B10 Player of the Year. Sophomore 3B Torsten Boss hit .369 with seven bombs and 57 rbis. Sophomore 2B Ryan Jones hit .350 and hit safely in 33 consecutive games at one point this season – good for a school record.

The pitching staff was anchored by junior Tony Bucciferro and senior Kurt Wunderlich. Bucciferro finished the regular season with a 8-2 record in 14 starts. He had a 3.22 ERA and K’d 61 in 95 innings. Wunderlich threw a complete game shutout against Northwestern in his final start at Kobs Field and finished with near identical numbers to Bucciferro – a 9-2 record, 3.36 ERA, and 60 K’s in 93 innings.

The team will enter Big Ten Tournament Play as the #2 seed and play Thursday at 3:35 on the Big Ten Network.
