Michigan State cheerleader falls at half court; taken to hospital

| December 1, 2011 | 1:10 am | 37 Comments

Tonight during the under eight minute timeout of the Florida State-Michigan State game, an MSU cheerleader was dropped during a stunt at midcourt. She was taken off the floor on a stretcher, but gave the Mike Utley thumbs up and was smiling as she was carried off.

The game was suspended for several minutes as MSU trainers and emergency personnel attended to her.

The Breslin Center public address announcer said that she was only taken off on a stretcher as a precautionary measure and that she will be alright. Great news.

Per Spartan beat writer Jim Rexrode, the cheerleader’s name is Taylor Young.  She’s 20 years old from Twin Lake, Michigan.  She was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing in stable condition.

  2. Anonymous says:

If poker is a sport, then cheerleading is ….? Seems like it takes more to be a cheerleader than a poker player. But I do feel sorry for those who must lift some of the fat cheerleaders I have seen, especialy in high schools.. Wisely, they usually put them on the bottom of the pyramid.

3 a day practices, lifting and gymnastics YEAH, its a sport.

CHEERLEADERS. THEIR ARE A LOT OF CHEERLEADERS IN THE WORLD. ALL 'PRETTY' LASSES SHOULD TRY OUT FOR CHEERLEADING STARTING IN HIGH SCHOOL. JUST, DON'T LET IT LEAD YOU TO 'PROSTITUTION" ; ) (GET OUT/ BEFORE THAT –HAPPENS—)

    Cards are games, not sports.

Cheerleading is not either…it's just a waste of time.

wheather cheerleading is a sport or not. if thats the pass time that you choose to spend then so be it. But sitting on ur ass playing cards is not a sport. i dont care if its worth 100 millions bucks

Very funny title … "Cheerleader Goes Down". Happens every night on campus.

Univ of Detroit has the fattest cheerleaders I've ever seen. The guys were straining and groaning aloud just to hoist those cows up to shoulder level. They didn't even attempt to toss them in the air. When they get that heavy, it becomes a freak show.

Now a days every physical activity is named a sport. Soon the olympics will not have 100yrd dash, long jumping or pole vaulting. It will have a bunch of overweight men playing poker or the great quilting competition of 2020. Sport or not you be the judge?

Poker is not a sport…what all because you can get millions means it is a sport!? Acting is a sport, I shuffle around on my fat ass flapping at midget porn…thats a sport. Wiping your ass become harder with weight gain!? Thats a sport. Typing these words…sport. Every god damn thing is a sport now a days. Turn you 360 on? You're an athlete! Turn over in bed…thats a sport!

Lets be honest…if A 93 year old woman can do it .I.E. play poker…then it isn't a sport. Grasping at straws honestly when you call it a sport. ESPN had nothing to show on t.v. one time and people got bored and watched the world series of poker for 4 minutes and the next thing you know…poker players…and ONLY poker players are calling it a sport. You litterally set there and play cards…a card game…UNO is next!!! Mark my words….we will be watching the Super Bowl of Phase 10 next! Maybe the Stanley Cup of Old Maid!? WTF!

  16. Anonymous says:

all because you do gymnastics hardly makes it a sport btw!

  17. Anonymous says:

A real sport is the thing the cheerleaders are at!

  18. Anonymous says:

  19. Anonymous says:

My 2 daughters were cheerleaders and one was a "flyer" like the young girl who fell. I cannot understand why mats are not placed on the floor to protect these girls before someone does get hurt seriously. Mats should become a mandatory pratice on the floor when doing these stunts. Is it going to take someone to get badly hurt before this practice is put into place?

Penn & Teller did a nice story on high school cheerleaders for their Bullsh!t program, available on YouTube. Short story, follow th emoney as to why cheerleading isn't considered a sport.

Some of your comments make me sick. Who cares about your personal views of cheerleading. A girl fell from about 6 feet in the air onto her neck. Regardless of if cheerleading is a sport or if she is fat, that would hurt all of you morons too. Get a life and stop insulting people.

  29. Anonymous says:

cheerleading isnt a sport….its just a bunch of girls flyign in the air and gay guys catchign them…who cares if she fell on her face? all that practice and you couldnt even do it right? DUMB!..Oh and this isnt worth the time to talk about anyways..

The basck spot should have easily cought the girl, just not paying attention. Sure, she may have been looking at the first cheerleader who fell, but no excuse. The second cheerleader who fell was directly in front of her. Bad coaching.

  31. Anonymous says:

Yes, cheerleading is a sport which they have numerous competitions throughout the season. And no, the backspot was not at fault, she was responding to the first flyer who fell. The first flyer pulled the second flyer as she was falling as a result of the pyramid. The guy couldn't help because his flyer fell behind him, it was just a bad situation. It happens occasionally, they may have been able to place a second spotter for the game.

  32. Anonymous says:

There's no such thing as sports anymore. If there is, then we still have sportsmanship. It's now "win at all cost" games.

  33. Anonymous says:

I hope the girl is not injured seriously and makes a full recovery.

  34. Anonymous says:

Cheerleading is retarded but at least the girls are athletes unlike, poker players, golfers, and fucking nascar drivers
