Miguel Cabrera takes fan’s “Fire Leyland” sign

If there is one thing that you can say about Jim Leyland, it’s that he likes “his guys” to a fault.  If there is a second thing you can say, it’d be that his players always have his back.  That was evident earlier this week when Miguel Cabrera took a “Fire Leyland” sign out of rebelling Tigers’ fan’s hands.

According to Detroit Sports Rag, the fan’s name is Justin Spiro who obviously isn’t a Leyland supporter.  Spiro made it his job to get ejected from EACH of the first three games of the Tigers-White Sox games at U.S. Cellular (I’m assuming for heckling Leyland, but you know what happens when you assume).  In the video below, Spiro trolled hard to get Cabby to talk bad about Leyland and teammates Don Kelly and Ryan Raburn.  Cabrera wouldn’t take the bait as he signed autographs for non-trolling fans.

For those wondering what Leyland’s fate is, he is not going to get “fired”. With 19 games left in the regular season (as of the writing of this post), there is no team in baseball that would fire their manager based on performance. But, Leyland is a lame duck whose contract is over at the end of this season. His fate most likely depends on whether the Tigers make the playoffs. If they don’t make the playoffs (they’re currently one game back in the division and five back in the Wild Card race.

Personal note: I’m not a Leyland supporter, but I love the way Cabrera handled himself here.  Ignore the trolling, sign your autographs and be on your way.  Well played, Miggy.

Im not the biggest Leyland fan, but this Justin Spiro fella is a douche.

  2. Don G. says:

Miguel Cabrera shows that he is a class act – first, by signing autographs (many major leaguers don’t); second, by coming back to sign more in the face of verbal banter by a fan who has no clue how tough it is to play in the bigs (along with many others on 97.1 FM Detroit); third, by remaining silent and even smiling and laughing back at the fans; fourth, by defending his manager by taking the sign.
He’s a class act and a great player.

    Good job Miggy. Very professional.

    That fan is a douche.

  4. TMadz says:

Does Cabrera hate America? Is he afraid of free speech? Sure, the fan is propably a douche, but it’s his God given constitutional right to be a douche. I don’t give Cabrera props for inoring the fan because he didn’t ignore him. Cabrera injected himself and took the guys sign. He’s a douche too who doesn’t understand what America is.

    • TMadz is wrong says:

The Constitution protects free speech from government censorship. Clearly TMadz doesn’t understand what America is

  5. Thomas says:

The only thing that bothered me about Cabrera’s reaction was physically taking the sign. Spiro has every right to have that sign and speak his mind as long as he doesn’t resort to vulgarities… and he didn’t.

  6. John says:

Tell us, “Tmadz”, about what America is. Tell us how, even if Cabrera had not taken the sign himself, it was likely that the sign would have been confiscated by park officials at some later point. Tell us, in your infinite wisdom, about how the ticket you purchase is merely a revocable license and that you don’t get to hide behind the First Amendment, which I’m sure you know ALL about (hint: if you say “freedom of speech”, you’re on the wrong path), in such an establishment that clearly reserves the rights as a private entity to regulate such signage.

No, really, enlighten us with your infinite wisdom.

“god given constitutional right”, now that’s an oxymoron
