John Beilein’s Michigan Wolverines deserve their expected number one ranking when the new polls are released Monday after knocking off Illinois in Champaign Sunday night.

#1 Duke was pummeled by Miami (FL) on Wednesday allowing the opportunity for Michigan to overtake the Blue Devils with a win Sunday.  The Wolvies coasted to a 74-60 victory but may have suffered a costly loss in the meantime.  Junior forward Jordan Morgan suffered a sprained ankle (according to the early diagnosis).

Beilein was unable to say shed anymore light on it.

“I don’t know.  I know that he has a sprained ankle, that’s all I know so far.  I know it was (bad enough that) he could not put weight on it.”

Morgan was hurt early in the first half of his 87th start in his college career.  He had to be helped to the locker room.  It seems likely that Morgan will miss time.  Sophomore forward Jon Horford and redshirt freshman Max Bielfeldt.  The Wolverines play Northwestern Wednesday, at Indiana Saturday and are back home on February 5th against Ohio State.

Michigan should be able to wallop Northwestern without Morgan, but will find it tough to beat the Hoosiers with the home-cooking that comes in Bloomington.
