After Max Scherzer spurned their huge offer (seven years for $144 million), the team turned its focus to signing all-everything Miguel Cabrera.  As of Thursday afternoon, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman is reporting that the Tigers and Cabrera were closing in on a “mega” extension that would make him a Tiger for life.  The two sides have been working on a deal in recent days as Miggy has worked on his yoga.

A deal was reached Thursday evening per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Was this smart of the Tigers?

The Tigers released a statement after Scherzer rejected their (very fair) offer.  pretty much conveying their frustration.  Some think the statement was released to show fans that they aren’t cutting costs, as perceived by some.  I’m guessing that this new massive deal with Miggy will prove otherwise.

Cabrera, 30, has been playing on a $152-million, eight-year contract.  The extension makes Cabby the highest paid position player.  The Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw currently is making an average annual salary of $30,714,286 in the extension he signed during the offseason.  More details will be provided as they become available.

It’s pretty sunny in Detroit right now.
